Exacta Open Platform Psgr Car Kits

Postby De Bruin » Wed Aug 09, 2017 9:27 pm

I seem to recall seeing Carey or one of our other old kit aficionados posting a photo of an advert for one the Exacta Open Platform 19th century style passenger car kits. Has anyone here actually built one of these ? or have one in their larder un-built? I've searched the site and gotten close with some of Rufus's comments re a Wagner Coach however not much else. Any info would be appreciated, am asking on behalf of a colleague who has purchased one that appears complete but does not have any instructions.
Thanks in advance.

Hello Pete

I recently purchased a Exacta / Central Lines Wagner sleeping car ...I'll try and take some photos and post them .

Here are some catalog pages 1948 and later and ad from 1951

I had one of the Postal cars shown in that last advert -- some sort of embossed compressed plastic, not metal at all.

I have 2 of the Wagner sleepers. The 1st is resting in the queue for whatever attention is may need - has a full interior and what appeared to be a means to take the roof off using a couple of screws from below.

and the second reverted back to a kit during its transit from Trainz......

Thanks Fellas; nice looking cars for sure. Did either of you retain or possess the plans for one? or do these kits even come with plans?

I've never had a NIB car to build; however, there was an unbuilt complete kit on eBay recently - there were plans/instructions included.

Pete - I have a kit with a set of instructions, I'll send you a copy but I need your address. You can email me direct if you prefer at suneill@yahoo.com.

The older kits were molded copper, then later they did them in a "plastic"; perhaps using the same molds.

Hello Exacta fans

Here are a few photos of the Wagner sleeper ...the walls are wafer thin ...standard wood floor and roof ...

You can read all about Scott's patented process of making the car walls at

https://patents.google.com/patent/US2508691A/en

favorite take away line
The acid proof protective coating can then be removed by means of hot lye.

Mr Firefly's comment about a plastic type wall ...my car is painted .... yellow and red would not be my first choice of colors ...looks more like a sleeping car for the miniature clowns aboard a Wardie Jay circus train... .but it looks period to the late 40's / early 1950's when it was made ...and I try and respect the period look even if questionable ... I'll have to find a hidden spot and do a scratch test for copper ... the car is very light .... very few pennies gave their life for construction of the walls ...

Sadly my sleeping car lacks a open railing and pair of steps .... any loose open end parts out there ?

The only "kit" directions I've found so far are from the web ....illustrating a "modern" car ... see below .

Cheers Carey

Many thanks guys
Steve, yes would love to get a photocopy of the plans, am emailing you the address, look forward to seeing you at O Scale SW in Ft. Worth.

Thanks for the photos and advert material views Carey, "loud" paint scheme aside I can certainly see the attraction of these; unlike anything else I can think of except for maybe one of those David O King "Gay Nineties" passenger car bodies, though these Exacta/Central's appear to better proportioned.

Martin, I look forward to seeing how your cars look after their rebuild run through the "Rufus Car Shops" I assume they'll wind up as additions to the passenger car roster of the Cumberland Valley.

Hello all

I applied some anti-gravitational force to the roof of the car and was blinded by the copper walls .... no doubt a deteriorate from a good night rest in the sleeper . As a sleeper the accommodations lean on the spartan side basic pine floor...so would suggest bringing a sleeping bag .

The raised areas on the out side of the cars are indented on the inside ...walls soldered in the corners and glued to floor ...delicate would be the best word to describe the car.

Cheers Carey

Maybe it's time for some drift. These aren't Exacta but still kinda interesting. Produced by Robico, I believe in the '50s, and not something you see every day. I'm thinking Rufus or Sarge may be able to provide some background. Probably headed for ebay.

Usually only see 1 car at time and sparingly of late; thought there were 5 cars in the set..... I'd look, but that might entail spelunking.....

Probably headed for ebay.

Bring them Indy this week....

RTF,

Wish I could but don't have the funds this year. Too much being spent to buy out the competition :D and building up inventory. We really hope to go next year.

Unfortunate - was looking forward to seeing you there!

Good for you!

Next year is next year and an unknown for my going to Indy at this time......a real TBD.

Jay - I'd like to buy your Van's kit.

I will bring some Robico kits to the Indy show so people can see what some of the varieties are.
