Just got back into town, sorry for the late reply. It may well represent an FA-1, my wheelbase measurement of the model was approximate at best and I came up with closer to FA-2 than -1, it's not all that much difference. However, the point I was trying to make is that it's not going to be very helpful in determining what the roof of a similar era EMD unit would look like.

I agree with this. Conveniently, another fireball has appeared on eBay and appears worthy of consideration:

But I have too many projects in the queue already, so I will not be bidding. Maybe the FA needs to go hang out with Joe's F3s.

I will give Bob's technique on restoration a try and report back with photos.

I looked at each index of all the old Mainline Modeler mags and came up with nothing on WM F3s.

MM ran a series of articles on the F3 (Jan/Feb 1982, Mar 1982, Apr 1982, Jun/Jul 1982), but with only 2 units WM was not mentioned from what I read.

MM did run a few articles on WM:

WM 4-8-4 Jul/Aug 1980

WM Bulkhead Flat Oct, 1992, Jan 1993, Mar 1993

WM Passenger cars Jul 1993

WM Drop End Gondola Oct 1993

WM Section house Nov 1999

WM Well Hole Flat Jun 2000, Dec 2001, Jan 2002, and Feb 2002 (I think the last 3 are on modeling the WHF)

WM Gondola Jan 2001

If these articles are of any interest I could scan/post them.

PROGRESS!
Today I punched the rivet impressions into two blank covers for the WM F-3 units. 0.015: sheet brass was used to make these covers and its thickness matches the other etched covers provided with these kits. One cover is now soldered to the top of the body shell and it turned out fine. So now I will wait for the photo showing the real loco with the rectangular grills! I would post a photo but have no idea how to do that on this forum since they changed things around. I made my riveting tool setup for my Rockwell vertical milling machine some years ago when I was making several riveted tender shells for All Nation B&O Ten Wheelers.

Joe...photo posting info...When you try to add a reply you get a screen that has a block on the lower edge titled Attachments with light blue surrounding. Click on that. You will then see right below that the Add files block surrounded by a block and clicking on that block brings you to a screen which allows you to go choose your pictures from ( in my case I have them on my Desktop ).

Then you click on the photo you want to add to the posting, and it loads for you to then click on Place inline, and once you do that it is added to the reply your making. Be sure to place the cursor precisely where you want the photo to appear like I just did as an example below...this is simple...go try it... :D

Hay Joe, checkout this photograph. This is MY tower at Maryland junction. The locomotive is one of the WM F3's as evident of the chicken wire on the sides. The locomotive is in the original "as delivered" Fireball scheme. Notice the locomotive has a blank cover just behind the horns with no rectangular openings. Hope this helps.
