Hello Hiawatha fans .
In Walthers' and the main line stomping grounds of the Hiawatha the local club would be mandated to have the stream-liner wearing down the rail-head. Model Railroader 1947 March ? runs an article about the Milwaukee Union Terminal ripping out the "antique " "out-dated" outside 3rd rail and going to the hip cutting edge 2 rail system. One of the photos shown is of the old layout complete with a Hiawatha ....engine does not quite look like the Lionel ... tender trucks are not Lionel ...so perhaps a custom built engine and tender .
Cheers Carey

Re: Walthers attic' and the Hiawatha cars
Hello Hiawatha fans
Upon the opening of Milwaukee's Union Terminal Railroad club ... None other than hometown legend of the O scale world William K Walthers was there ... Admiring a custom built Hiawatha. In the text it mentions Walthers from Crestline .
Walthers made his money doing what before entering into the train game ?
Cheers Carey

Re: Walthers attic' and the Hiawatha cars
Hello all Hiawatha fans ..
The Hiawatha Bill Wathers is admiring at the Milwaukee RR Club is still there ...
and yesterday at the local train show I was able to pick up a modified Lionel Hiawatha with a scratch built tender to pull the string of Walthers cars ...very happy. The engine casting has had additional lines engraved into it and scaling of the handrails & marker light etc ... just need to add the outside 3rd rail shoes and we'll be heading down the rails . Need to find some proper Walthers Hiawatha trucks for some of the cars .
Cheers Carey
Here is the modified Lionel Hiawatha that lives in Milwaukee
Here is my newly acquired modified Hiawatha ...
Not too thrilled with the choice of wings and red nose reindeer in the front ...may have to see about adapting a Lionel set of wings
This modified Lionel Hiawatha hit ebay a few weeks ago ..... modifying the Lionel "stock" engine was popular to make a more / closer to "real" engine ...but there was no hope for the Lionel Hiawatha cars ...
