A really lovely set of cars, wherever they came from.
One could make up a truncated Broadway Limited and pull it with an S-1 or a 3-porthole T-1 or a GG-1.
After, of course, replacing the trucks.
The lining on the cars, based on the closeup photo, is almost certainly hand-done with a lining pen, a technique used in the UK for all their coaching stock (pre-Nationalization). I suspect the builder was acquainted with the techinque in the era prior to once widely available decals. There is a special pen, Rotring, that can be used for more uniform results. I tried it using a pen from my engineering drawing set but could not get happy results.

Now you just go to the stationery store, buy a "Pilot" fine line decorating pen, and have at it. Paint must dry for a week, but then it is easy. Photo when I fire up the Windows 10 (ugh).
