Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
Re: Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
Nice work. Too bad the photo of the uboat wasn't straight on, then you could just trace it and get accurate vector artwork. The latest sheet looks really close for most.
Btw, Southern Railway u-boats were all high-nose like this unit.

I did find a full on side view. Then zoomed it up to the actual size of the model and just measured it right off the screen. This attempt I think is right on.
Also check out the small cab herald that Jim did, perfect. He did the letters too.

Re: Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
I have some sad news to report:
Allan has taken that last rain west. It was a very sudden onslaught of pancreatic cancer. I will post a link to his obituary in the next post. We will all miss him - he made some castings for me that I will treasure.
I hope that someone gets the opportunity to finish this Squaw Creek project in his honor. He was a lively contributor to this rather small group of O Scale fanatics.

Jim and Bob,
Could you please pass along to O scalers who might be interested the news of Allan's passing last week? Allan's interest in O scale trains really grew in the last decade and they were a huge part of his life.
My daughters and I are doing well and will get through this time, I believe with a stronger bond than ever.
Below is a link to Allan's obituary and, for those who are interested, a link to donate to pancreatic cancer research and support in Allan's name. He was an amazing person.
We are planning a Celebration of Life and I will pass along information when it is available.
Thanks again to all. Janet

Another bump -- Allan's Squaw Creek U36C project passed to Bob T. after Allan's death. I have photos somewhere and will post soon but I think Bob has better and more recent photos and I will encourage him to post here if convenient.

I think Bob may have posted photos of the Squaw Creek U36C but I will post what I have and encourage him to post a better photo or two if he has it.

Here is a very nice looking Santa Fe U30CG that I suspect was also built from Ken Kryer castings:
Ebay #164618697611 O SCALE 2 RAIL MODIFIED SANTA FE DIESEL PROJECT 16 1/2" EXTRA GEAR BOXES 597452
I think I saw the model in the Steven Neill collection that Stout recently auctioned off, but their pictures were not as nice as 108popular's pictures. I figured I'd post it here to bump this thread in the hopes of keeping Allan's posts around longer.
Re: Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
Thanks Chris, agree thinking this is from one of Kryers Penn Erie casting sets, I recall seeing a blurry b&w photo of one of these U30CG's in one of Lorenzen's monthly news letters amongst a bunch of other semi-finished LWS and Penn-Erie offerings. Missing drive aside the car body looks pretty good and a singularly rare model and prototype to boot.

I think I posted Allan's "Squaw Creek" unit in another recent thread. It of course belongs here. This thing is actually powered, although I have not really run it through its paces. Note that I got the handrail posts down to a reasonable cross-section. Maroon helped with the decals, and of course provided Allan's work for completion.

That Obs was given to me by Jim/Pete. I plan to make "Texas Gulf Sulphur" decals and make it an executive car.
Here's a photo without the car:

I have always liked bright vivid colors. They are such a change after seeing mostly dark PRR. B&O, C&O and N&W in my younger days.
