Squaw Creek Coal U36C project

Postby aww » Wed Mar 18, 2015 11:59 am

Low nose removed from a Ken Kryer u36c. Now to fabricate a brass high nose to make the Coal Creek engine. It will have ush 6 axle drive with two Pittman can motors (3rd number is a 3 Bob) running though reduction gearing to give slow speed. I think I will cut off the cast fuel tank and make a sheet brass one. Now I need to find another Ken Kryer body to make a pair.

Great project, Allan. Here is some inspiration:

I will survey my collection of Penn-Erie shells to see if I have one that matches.

Allan -- this one looks like a match to me, but of course you get the final call on that:

Sorry the photos are any better -- I found them in my files and they look like they were taken with a cell phone camera. Let me know if I need to take some measurements or if you need different photos. Otherwise let me know if you are interested in this going from deep in my closet to the top of your workbench. Might be the best thing that could happen to it, even if it means losing its nose.

Yeah. After you finish your pair, I might have to look for one. I ignore low hoods, but like that Squaw!

Vaguely reminiscent of an F-M Trainmaster.

It's that diabolically mega-cool paint- job yellow and green, red stripe, "squaw" herald, and of course the high-nose just makes it about irresistible.
Great project!

Squaw did have a Train Master in those colors.

High hood finished and staged on engine. Also cut off the cast fuel tank and need to make sheet brass replacement, and the two air tanks.

Upon re-reading my text I saw that I referred to this engine as "Coal Creek"' , good grief! I need to read my text before I hit the submit.

Purely freudian Allan, great job on this high nose, I'm stunned at how fast you fabricated this, I'd suspect a 3 dimensional printer if it wasn't obviously brass. You're on a roll!!

As an aside does anyone else think this Squaw Creek scheme is a modified Precision Engineering scheme? I mean you take away the sharp goodies like the cab herald and that red stripe it looks like one to me, but the web dives do not corroborate.

You guys reminded me of a railroad I flew over last October - the Escalante Western.

Here is a photo link:

Too bad they are chop- nose. I could get into a nice SD-7 in these colors.

I think the hardest part of these is the grab iron rungs. They came out ok but not perfect. The rear of this engine is of course aluminum and thick. A 1/32" drill just doesn't last long here and then you have a broken piece of the thing stuck in the hole. I am trying a method, I drilled out the pattern with a bigger drill that will survive and then filled all the holes with JB Weld. When it sets up I will file it flush and mark off the pattern again. Then drill with 1/32" again in the softer material. A shot of thin CA should do then.

Actually I think I will do the nose rungs again with slightly smaller holes than I used for the aluminum holes and then tin the area and fill the holes with solder. Then lay out the pattern on the tinned area and drill 1/32", then file it smooth. The tinned surface will reduce the tendency for the drill bit to "walk". The soft solder will be less strain on the tiny drill bit also. We'll see.

Some progress on the Squaw Creek diesel. I made a brass roof so could solder the window shades on, also cut out giant hole in roof for radiator screens. I have the drive figured out, KTM gearboxes with two PSC transfer cases and two Pittman motors. Also have long 6/32 screws run through the body sides in several places to make sure the center seam doesn't open up. Also cut off the cast fuel tank to change to sheet brass one.

Looking real good Allan, I noticed you also removed the lower pilot area end of the casting as well,
I assume you'll be fabricating the pilots for a sharper, more detailed look as well?

Thanks for posting the progress photos, Allan. The high nose really changes the look of that U-boat. Those trucks are nice looking too. Castings from your own foundry, by chance? I don't recognize them.

Jim

(And no hurry on shipping the box. My closet is full so I need some time to sell some stuff on eBay to make room)
