Finally back on this project. Ten SP KM Hydraulics will be built. This one is P48.














This brainchild for this project is John Ford. I'm building he's designing, funding and marketing the beast.

Just as an FYI the frame is made from 3/8" brass plate and should pull a fairly decent train without adding extra weight.

More to follow as the project unfolds.

But, whatever did happen to that little steam engine you had been working on? I saw the stack assembly in the other thread regarding drilling & brass rivets, etc. Those were finished??? Any pictures???

No, not yet. Still trying to get the tender shells made. Actually there are a few more parts to create on the Sonoma. Let's see we need the 1876 injector and decide if we want to use formed fenders or cast. I'll probably get fired up once the tender shells are ready. Oh yeah, then there's the decal fiasco. If I start talking about them I'll probably have a stroke.

Can you share any pictures of where you are with that project though - I'm a fan of the smaller earlier engines and one doesn't get to see them being made very often. When you can bring yourself to it w/o the stroke.

I think Jay is having more fun than I am, though perhaps the eighth or ninth of these might not be as fun as the second or third. I am assuming the first isn't as much fun because you are working through all the kinks.

Cool stuff. I hate to admit that I am unfamiliar with the prototype. Alas I am one of those railfans whose interests start petering out after.....well, after the SD-45!

Well that is pretty amazing Jay. The prototype doesn't have traction motors? I wonder how that works.

Kraut Voith transmissions with torque converters powered by trans-shafts, perhaps not too far from truck mounted "tower" drives in design/location, their crews purportedly leery of those big honking drive shafts turning under the cab floor fearing a catastrophic failure. The earlier DRG&W demo version is interesting too, but always liked later the American-ized version better, and yes pre-date SD-45's by 5 years.

Personally, sorely impressed and humbled by your work on these "busy" car bodies in process here; the truck frames are really cool too.

This is fantastic and a wonderful endeavor that you have tackled. Building ten of these beasts is not an easy feat.
Just out of curiosity, are these for a small batch of wealthy and lucky owners? Any hope that this model could be replicated in Asia at a more affordable cost under your supervision? How did you get the parts made and assembled? Photo-etching? Casting?

Please, tell us more when you get a chance.

Hey Guys,

The truth is, John Ford created most, if not all, of the parts. If memory serves, he worked with his brother to create the etchings and Dennis & Kathy Mashburn for the castings. Originally there were three models built. Jerry Snow did the assembly, Cockerham provided the drives and John did the painting and finish work. I think I did a little on them but not much.

John succumbed to pressure to have more built and here we are. Same parts, different drive. Jerry Snow drive in the beginning but most changed out to my stuff. Because of the weight I'm probably going to go with wider belts & pulleys.

I really don't know what they'll cost but I do know not all are spoken for.

If you consider California part of the USA then, yes, I'm in the USA.

Most of us on the "Least" Coast consider the "land of nuts and fruits" part of the USA (barely-just kidding)!!
