When it leaves a fire it is hotter than ambient air.
After being in the air for a while it cools down to the same temperature as ambient air.

Are you thinking that hot air and smoke should rise? It does until it cools off.

So, if hot air/steam/smoke from a locomotive boiler rises, why does it cling to this locomotive?

The Empress 2816 is a 4-6-4 Hudson-type steam locomotive built by the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) in December 1930 for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP)

This locomotive has a more efficient feed water heater system. Exhaust steam/smoke is close to ambient air temperatures.

Y'all probably think I have abandoned this topic. Not so! I continue to read and listen to articles and videos on smoke lifters. Most information about smoke lifters is useless. Are smoke lifters useless? I watched a Canadian video on restoring a Canadian locomotive with smoke lifters. They left the smoke lifters off for the first test run... mistake! They could hardly see where they were going because of the smoke. They hurried back to the shop to put them back on. Smoke lifters were useful on that locomotive. Useful information.

Here is one video I found useful (and I loved the model trains used in the video.)
What do they (smoke lifters) actually do?

The smoke lifters on this locomotive do not lift or deflect the smoke, but they do keep it above the locomotive. How?

Those appear to be wallpapers.

The models in the wallpapers are identical to the models in the video.
Steel Bridge Models information about the videos states, "All models in this video were created, rendered, and animated by myself using Blender."
The models in the video are 3D drawings; some are animated.
