It was just a reasonable discussion until a couple posters forgot their meds.

Given where it was posted there, it's just about what you can expect from that crowd.

Seems like they have a lot of ostriches over there that do not like having their heads pulled out of their behinds.
I expect nothing and I’m still let down.

All coming from a crowd that buys $600 Natty Boh cars.

Many of the responders on the Forum in question suffer from extreme butt-hurt if any question the accuracy of a mass-produced model.

I just started to read the thread in question, and the guy was aware of what he had, and the thing actually looks pretty decent. Dang three rail rivet counters!
I read that particular Forum because, occasionally, there is a pony underneath the crap. So when this thread showed up and I looked at the photos I realized that there was no pony there, as did Hot Water. OTOH, his recommendation to go find the 3rd Rail model was fatuous, given the rarity of that particular offering.
I keep thinking that someday people will observe that the word "model" is in the term "model railroading." Forlorn hope, I know. :?

The guy is a TOY train buff. He says it's a FANTASY piece. You and HW had no grounds to comment.

Oh, fercrissake...As I recall he nowhere said it was a fantasy piece (which it is). Nossir, he claimed it was a CB&Q 2-10-4. It's not. If he had claimed fantasy likely no one would have criticized. Given all this, HW, I, and a couple others were well within the bounds of decency.
Find another red flag to wave.

Here is a direct unedited copy of his second post:

Ray... this is a fantasy scheme loco... its just not realistic for the manufacturers to tool up all the unique engines in the steam era...

It looks close and i am thrilled with it...

I don't think so. The words "It looks close," is in relation to the PROTOTYPE which opens up a whole can of worms. The declarative nature of his statement is an invitation for criticism and comparison of the train. That includes the whole spectrum of opinions from "yes it is" to "no way." If you are stating something declarative like that in public, especially on a forum, you'd better be prepared to buckle up, and rightfully so.

I'm not sure why he chose those words to defend the train. There was no need to since it is a fantasy model. He should have simply stuck with, "I'm thrilled with it."

In defense of the Lionel PRR J1's owner, I'll point out that the colors on his 2-10-4 appear to correctly match the colors on the CB&Q prototype.

Getting colors correctly matched is apparently a big accomplishment for Lionel, judging by what I just read on MTJ: : PE color gone wrong!

Why should he have to defend his choice at all? He's an adult and it's his money. It's no one's business but his what he chooses. A bunch of Know It Alls who have NO manners.

Hey, many years ago, there was a dentist in Steubenville Ohio that bought every Max Gray, U.S Hobbies engine produced and proceeded to paint them with auto paint with a rainbow of the color spectrum. Candy apple red, baby blue, hot pink etc. Of course, the paint not being scalecoat obscured all the fine detail, but that was his money and what he wanted.

There was no reason to. He shouldn't have. If you know it is a fantasy engine and you are going to be happy with a fantasy engine, then be happy with the fantasy engine and don't tell a few thousand other people that it looks close. He defended it even before HW wrote a single word as far as I can recall. Wasn't that a discrepancy HW responded to?

Fantasy on one hand and "close" just don't match up. Simple carelessness, speaking out of both sides of his mouth, I don't know. There were so many more appropriate words or phrases other than "close" that would have been unquestionable.

Chris Webster,
