The price is quite high, but never forget - nobody is forced to buy these things. If you could get it for a grand, I suspect it would look great in some rattle can black. I converted a Lionel FEF to 2-rail, and it is exceedingly well detailed. It appears accurate, and makes my USH look a bit toy-like.

Outrageous is a good word - I note that somebody has split up a Scale Craft K4 without rods or valve gear, and the total before shipping if you win both auctions, is $400. Not outrageous; just triple what it is worth. I have the rods, but wouldn't consider the locomotive and tender for more than $100.

Well, it must be a very special Lionel model....maybe the pilot or ??? But, it just shows that we have gougers in all scales and number of rails. Buying them IS a choice, but it always disgusts me when I see it never-the-less. I was told by a 3R collector that the high prices for Lionel are in the past.........apparently this seller doesn't know that, choses to ignore it or most likely doesn't care.

The new “craze” in 3R is custom, small quantity, “fantasy schemes” done by certain train stores, ie, Mr Muffin/Train World/etc that are not done by Lionel or MTH in a current catalog. Typically the manufacturer announces the “base” model (in this case a Big Boy) and then the train stores try to fulfill a minimum order number for the “special” edition version their selling. Hence, the 3R secondary market can demand a premium price for the “custom run” version, because, after all, it’s a limited quantity produced (sarcasm).

Safe to say, it’s not our thing but others enjoy it. Which is great for them.
