I wisely have kept careful notes over the years, as I create and print decals infrequently, such that I would be starting over each time without the notes.


Good tip for all on more than just decal creation

Bump. Mostly because our last post was two days ago - what are we doing here? Trying to match OGR for not posting?

The Mongrel Mogul now has a couple coats of self-etching primer, which turns out to be smooth enough for decals! I will be happy to post more photos, but am going to hold off a bit until we get a few non-bobturner photos posted. Shutterfly has not protested the hundreds of photos I have had them host, but I still add more with trepidation. Maybe they will look kindly upon me for buying my own books?

Maroon and I are looking at resurrecting the Lobaugh Suburban as well - if we start that, I will change the title above to Mongrels, both Mogul and Suburban. That is exactly what these two are - a dying Lobaugh company using up spare parts.

The primer is SEM self-etching black - available on Amazon for the low low price of $28 and change for a single can. Results are as good as the old Scale Coat, and it looks smooth enough for decals. I have access to this high quality, expensive rattle-can through my honorary employment as an aircraft mechanic, but am going to lay in a can next time I accumulate a $35 order.

I suppose I freaked out a bit when my favorite rattle cans (Dupli Color) went from $4/can to $8 (now $17) but this stuff is so good it is almost worth it!
I still have photos waiting - need a couple more Ten-Wheelers from others so inclined first.

Maroon supplied gorgeous alloy tender arch bar trucks. The alloy isn't strong enough to hold the screws that hold the bolster - soweare using Lobaugh Andrews tender trucks - not bad, but not elegant.

The trucks we need are those Wabash Mogul trucks - kit K-9092 or side frames K-5167. USH did them as well - X-1040 (probably a Kemtron part #).

I will check with Wiseman - he may have the master. Meantime, if any of you have spares of those or Lobaugh arch bar tender, let us know.

The Mogul is done, except for that. Photos tomorrow, then off it goes.

Adding the Suburban - Maroon captured the one offered on eBay last month, and offered it to me - not being a lover of tank engines, I sort of declined, but offered to complete the assembly.

These things are rarer than hens teeth - I have only heard of two of them, and one of those is in my shop as I type. Jack Jupp had the other, and at one point I had a photo. Jack and his buddies are all long gone.

Ed Bommer is delighted that we actually uncovered one, and is further delighted that we will put CNJ logo on it.

Anyway, here it is, unpainted, and needing a tad more lowering in the back. Runs exceptionally smoothly on my 68" radius test loop with a string of freight cars. It will get three CNJ passenger cars behind it when it gets back to Jim.

Uh-oh. I took it with the iPad. Shutterfly cannot handle those images. You will only see the poorly painted black version - too bad; it was elegant in brass!
