That is the solution from what I understand. The complete kit is up to $59 and would be the way to start out IMHO. Link below is to a Amazon posting but I saw it on EB for the same money yesterday.

Yeah, I'm amazed at the options. There are some good videos on U-tube showing how this chemical leaching process works and several ways of controlling what is plated or processed and what is not.

The ebay/amazon system looks like a classic plating system with a actual nickel rod. The only downside is I only see these kits for nickel and copper, not for other metals. Wouldn’t matter much for grab irons but if you are trying to match existing parts it might matter.
From my post war restoring days, note the eccentric rod is nickel but the side and main rod are tin.
