Tom Monaghan (founder of Domino's) was also an avid car collector as well as a purveyor of crap delivery pizza.

Interesting. I thought I was the only one who thought that "pizza" was indistinguishable in flavor from the box in which it was delivered (tried only once.) Yet, they have a storefront that has remained in business for several years, now, nearby.

Both Domino's and Papa John's seem to continue on.......which speaks volumes on what is considered acceptable food

We have a true Sicilian Pizza family here locally. They have two facilities. Best dough, best sauce, hand spun, and just as reasonably priced, (even better than Pizza Hut and other chains). They make both thick and New York style, and my choice is always the thick sliced, which BTW, is not round. Pepperoni, sausage, bacon, extra cheese, and if my wife ain't eatin', you're damned right I get the anchovies.

There's gotta be a lot of money in Pizza. Not long after J & S opened up, Vinnie, (the owner) came in and bought a new '98 Chrysler 300C with all the bells and whistles, and he paid for it in 3 payments with cash! The first 1/3 was for holding the car. We did all his service work, and it's as rare as hens' teeth for a tech to get a customer tip, considering that the dealership just raped them, but Vinnie was a tipper. All this at the time when he was payin' the mall where he had his first outlet $3 K a month in rent.

I'm so glad you brought that subject up. When I took delivery of my new Mercedes GLE, last Friday, the gentleman who escorted me though the whole process, right up to handing me the keys at the car door, seemed to linger. I thought of handing him a hundred dollar bill, within my handshake, which I had moved to my pocket just-in-case it seemed appropriate, but in the end, it somehow did not. I'd appreciate your viewpoint on this, Mitch. Should I have gone ahead and tipped him, as was my motivation to do, or would he have been insulted (by the small amount) or put-off ?

$100 is a non-trivial tip. It would have put you in good stead, at least with the salesman.

I may be wrong but if this is a place that you use on a regular basis I don't think there would be any problem the next visit to look up the salesman and say that you were so excited when you took delivery that you forgot. He will remember.

Good idea, Roger. And thank him again, for taking such good care of you.

I wouldn't tip a car salesman. He's doin' his job in selling you the car. If he gave you the whole spiel before you left the dealership, like giving the tour of the facility, introducing you to the service department, (and I don't mean just the advisors), the wash bay and cleanup facility, and the customer waiting area when having ' service performed, you might or might not give them a gratuity, depending on your mood. If you've had your car in for a tough intermittent electrical problem and they didn't fix it, and then you go to another dealership and they find and fix the problem, then the tech that figured it out and fixed it may be eligible.

Pizza is a big business. One of my customers sells $900,000 in pizza boxes a day and he is not the only company selling them. The guy has 30 tractor trailers and 2 rail sidings. 24 hours a day cardboard comes in gets printed and cut. loaded in trucks and delivered. None stop.
I spend entirely too many hours a day tying my shoes

Papa John's sauce is too sweet, almost like spaghetti sauce. Domino's is just bad. The corporate headquarters is just off campus at "Domino's Farms". They used to have a $5 all you can eat lunch buffet. Two slices was all I could stand.

These guys are still an order of magnitude over "CiCi's". That's the worlds worst pizza. They try to run it like a Golden Coral for "pizza". Sh*t on a shingle!

One of the best NY style pizza's I've come across (and I grew up in the NY metro area) was at the Phoenix airport. They have NYPD (New York Pizza Dept) at two of the terminals. Great authentic NY pie and it was priced very reasonably. I got two big slices of sausage and a fountain drink for about $8.50 Remember, this is at an airport and I've had to pay a lot more for a lot less.

My thoughts exactly, when you go in for service you don't see the salesman, you see the service writer. He's the guy to be friends with as the salesman is long gone by that time. Unless you buy a new car every year, from the same salesman, he won't remember you.

My issue is how mechanically weak the technicians are today. If the computer doesn't tell them an error code, they can't find the problem. Also, had my tires rotated as part of a 30K check-up and the VW Touareg uses 33lbs in front and 39lbs in the rear. They rotated them all right, but didn't adjust the tire pressure which made for a very strange ride until I discovered it. Time before that lied about topping off the Blue DEF fluid as I got a low fluid warning a month later...supposed to last 6 months to a year. Actually we've had an issue every time they service the car.

I guess I need to tip the service writer, but their so young and flighty its hard to tell if they have anymore going on upstairs than the technician.

Chuck, did you ever go to "John's" Pizza in Greenwich Village, back in the day? I don't know if they are still there.

"Pizza Uno" used to have numerous locations in NY and NJ, years ago, but they seemed to disappear suddenly, despite advertising their "deep dish Chicago style " thick and rectangular pizzas.

Still have one about 2 miles away, but have not been in it for many years - lousy service and mediocre food. No idea how it survives, but then again if people like Papa John's and Domino's then mediocre might be a step up.

Best pizza that I've had in many years was oddly enough at the Mellow Mushroom in Charleston, SC

Holy Shiitake Pie
Olive oil and garlic base with shiitake, button and portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella, and MontAmoré®. Finished with a garlic aioli swirl and a spritz of black truffle oil. Garnished with fresh chives and shaved parmesan
