Where do you feel safe?

Postby MurphOnMillerAve » Wed Nov 16, 2016 9:53 am

And what decisions and measures do you take to help ensure that you are safe there?

Interesting question. Just this past weekend my wife and I decided to put a supply of water, MRE's, meds and other necessities (guns) in our safe/tornado room (concrete vault with metal door) in our house. It was poured with the foundation so we hope it doesn't blow away and the 2" inch thick steel door has 3 deadbolt type locks from the inside.

We've lived in the house 6 years and never thought twice about using this room during bad weather, unless we would see a tornado bearing down on us (happens in OK). Being from the KCMO area all our life we are fascinated by the weather down here and always go outside to see what the clouds area doing during bad weather.

Anyway, we are stocking the safe room because of current events in our country, not because of weather. So, I guess we feel safe in that room, but that is a last ditch place to go. I would rather take out whoever is trying to harm us.

Actually, I feel safe pretty much all of the time because I won't let fear rule my life. We drive around and go places as needed, but we are not people who eat out, go to movies or anywhere without a specific purpose (doctor, hardware store, etc., etc. The last time I was really out at night was last May when I was driving back and forth to the hospital to visit my wife in ICU after her heart attack. Felt normal, but I was also very aware that I live in a different world today.

When I was a kid in eastern Ohio in the 1940s and 1950s I felt safe everywhere. Maybe I was not smart enough to know better.
The government tried to scare us in the 1960s with the nuclear attack threats. That didn't seem to work either.
I see more to worry about today. I have no interest in placing blame on any group but it really bothers me that so many people
are involved in the making of confusion today. It seems to be possible that one could be reading a book that a passer-by doesn't like
so he gets out his weapon and kills you. This seems more likely to happen today than the Soviets attacking us in the 1960s.

I guess my answer to the question is nowhere. :( :(

I feel safe everywhere i go. I do trade shows in almost all our major cities. After a long day of sitting in a convention center i walk back to the hotel.(Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Baltimore, South beach Miami Nyc and others.) Most door men are shocked to hear me say " i walked from the convention center" Well not Baltimore that's an overpass from the convention center to the hotel. I did walk from the casino back to the hotel in Baltimore.
I have been studying the martial arts and now i'm trying to teach 3 year old daughter. I pray for her safety every day. My fear is that things go down hill in the USA. during her life time. Yes i believe anarchy will take place within the next 15 years.
I spend entirely too many hours a day tying my shoes

Fifteen years ago my wife and I would go to Savannah to hear the Savannah Symphony, now defunct, and would park at the Civic Center then walk
@ a mile to a restaurant we liked and then, of course, back. It would be after dark and never worried about anything happening. There was another
killing in Savannah today. I don't remember what number that is. There seems to be at least one shooting a day. In the past these did not happen down town. Now anywhere and anytime. Not long ago the Savannah newspaper said that the shootings per capita were higher in Savannah than in New York City. We seldom go to Savannah anymore except for doctor appointments. The tourist traffic has not fallen yet so what is happening must not be
reported outside this area. I expect more riots, protests and lawlessness unfortunately before I am dead.

The plain old truth of the matter is, if your number's up, doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing, you are screwed. That doesn't mean I intentionally do stupid things to try and hasten my demise, but being "safe" is somewhat a figment of one's imagination.

Hey, ain't that a tornado over there???!!!! Looks like Miss Gulch just flew by on her bicycle....and there goes old Butch......must'a forgot to bolt the deadlock on the bunker!!!!

Just kidding gang! Sorry Butch, couldn't resist rewriting the "Wizard of Oz"!

Somewhere in a cave...

Jake quickly lifted his had in the air, signaling Butch not to move. He put his finger to his mouth for Butch to be quiet. He motioned to the entrance. He heard something, Butch didn’t. They had made a mistake. They had allowed themselves to get trapped in the cave without an escape.

Jake slipped behind one of the stones above the lamps. He quickly blew them out and hoped whoever he heard didn't see the light. He pulled his gun out of the holster and pointed it in the direction of the entrance. Butch found a drop in the floor and slowly made his way to the ground without making a sound.

A small light from a candle came around the corner to the area they were hiding. A large man followed the light of the candle. He apparently hadn't seen the two lit lamps. He walked in the direction Jake was hiding. As he came closer Jake could see it was Clay Sawyer.

Clay stopped just a few feet before he reached Jake. Clay pulled his gun. He looked around the cave maneuvering the candle back and forth to light up a small area in the room. He stood there as if he was trying to listen for something. Jake and Butch stayed frozen.

Clay holstered his gun. He leaned over and lit the two lamps. The room slowly illuminated. He blew out the candle, closed his eyes and leaned back stretching his body.

(Clay felt safe in the cave. Big mistake, he was not in or around Tucson, he was in Kentucky.)

Clay let out a groan and straightened back up staring at Jake who was pointing a gun at his chest.

"What the hell?!" Clay yelled.

"Hello Clay," Jake said. "If you so much as breathe too heavy I'll Kill you."

Take someone with me so if one gets stuck, the other can return occasionally with water while the stuck one is waiting to lose enough weight to get unstuck.

A very, very horrifying place. But then again, I have extreme claustrophobia, so I have no idea why any person would put themselves into such a place or situation. And if somebody ever put me in a place or situation like that, it would be my sole life's purpose - if I were ever free - to hunt that person down, no matter how long it might take, to exercise my vengeance.

Now, do you think I just made that up for fun and effect, or do you take me as sincere?

So they are not tempted to kill themselves if the lights go out and they find themselves in such a predicament, I'd say.

Speaking of guns...I was talking to a co-worker not long ago and he told me you can now get a concealed gun permit ONLINE!!!

When I got home I looked into it and sure enough it's there.

I went to a website and they had a video, so I watched it (45 minutes). At the end of the video they invite you to take a test (got it all right) and send them $79 to receive my certificate and necessary forms to take to the court. I did and printed out everything I needed.

So 2 days later I go to the clerk of the court and hand her my paperwork, and $52 ($2 for using my credit card, also cost $2 to park). That was all there was to it!

In less than 2 weeks I got my permit in the mail, cost...$133

But the whole time I was thinking, is this the way this is suppose to work? Seemed too easy for someone to get that piece of paper. I did it just to see if it was legit and could be done.

A few years ago we took a friend of ours to Colonial Williamsburg. While touring the places we stopped in the old courthouse to hear a tour guide talking. He said back in the day the "law" was that EVERY MAN was required to carry a firearm. The reason was was that everyone was in the militia and therefore you had to have a reason NOT to carry one. Of course that only applied to free (mostly white) men and not slaves or convicts.

How many of you are old enough to recall running around outdoors playing "army"? Back in the 50s I had a neighbor who's dad was a colonel in the National Guard and his attic was loaded with stuff (backpacks, rations, belts, canteens). We looked like the real deal when we hit the beach (I mean street).

Try that now and the SWAT team will have you taken down in no time.

To answer the original query, I feel safe enough where I live, but I don't travel to Hampton/Newport News. They have a shooting/murder reported in the paper every day. And that says something when I feel safer in Portsmouth than anywhere else.

We typically would turn our lights out just to experience the darkness.

One time I went into a mine shaft alone--stopping only when light from the entrance was too dim to see anymore. I called for one of my friends to bring in a flashlight. I was standing one foot from a vertical shaft. He threw a rock into the shaft. We heard it bouncing off the sides for a long time. Sure glad I did not step where I could not see... I might have met all the people at the bottom who did take one more step. A grave is the ultimate safe place. (Job 14:13)

Another fun thing to do is ride bicycles in abandoned mines that are tall enough to do so. I feel safe from automobiles running me down in a mine shaft.

Or into the mineshafts?

There is one mine I quit riding in because it constantly creaks and groans plus the air is always dusty. I have been thinking of revisiting that mine so I could post a photo of riding in the haunted mine. Probably post over in the Hobo Jungle since it does not fit this topic (I do not feel safe in that mine.)

In NYC, it is illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk. If you've ever been a pedestrian on a sidewalk in NYC, I think you can see why.
