Earlier in this thread I mentioned Set Up Running, the biography of a Pennsylvania Railroad engineer. His first job on the road was as fireman for the engine that hauled the pay car. Rufus has posted some photos of a model of a similar pay car of that period in his thread on rebuilds in the 2 rail section.

Imagine being 21 years old with a decent paying job that had you spending nights in different towns.

On the subject of The battle of Leyte Gulf:
I had this book in my library and forgot about it.
"The Battle for Leyte Gulf" by C. Vann Woodward. Pretty nearly the final word on the subject.

Two favorites from my children's early years:

Still have two rather dog-eared copies here at the house.

All "Pogo" books by Walt Kelly.
His satire still applies.

"If I am elected president where do I have to go?"
"To the capitol of the country, Washington, D.C."
"Where's that?"
"A mighty fur piece up the creek."

The above may not be exact but it's close. I think from
"I Go Pogo", 1956. Not sure of the date.

My thanks to whoever recommended Brownie the Boomer An entertaining and informative read.

I've also read The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Six Frigates which were recommended here and enjoyed them.

A buddy of mine who was a history major at Rutgers just gave me this book. While I'm a WWII nut most of my reads have been army air corp or army, I have read about the naval battles in the pacific but this should be in depth. I just started reading it this morning.
