Why did some cities, like Pittsburgh , discontinue trolleys in favor of buses? Can we suppose that at least part of the reason was that the tracks damaged car tires? How about using combinations of trolleys and buses, having the buses for the hillier parts of a town/county and trolleys for the more level areas and less air pollution?

We had no rail transit service at all in the greater Los Angeles area between 1963 and 1990. Since then, we've been slowly rebuilding it.

I thought the San Diego system was operational in the 80's?

The Baltimore street car exactly as I remember it...pounding down Old Frederick Road in Catonsville:

This was taken in 1963 when my grandparents were still living in Catonsville. Can remember driving behind these things sopping up the ozone, the Old Man carefully straddling the rails with his '57 Plymouth.

It is laying over in Towson in front of the courthouse. Note the single track.
