Maybe you have hit on something there. Perhaps they are for a variety of tired birds to rest upon. The ones without arms have had them stormed away by rough weather or are designed for use by smaller birds?
Re: Car Thread
Aha! Some answers.
This answer is exactly correct:
They are called rescue towers.

Re: Car Thread
Exactly correct? What's "fashionable" about their lateness? (Just a rhetorical question.)
Re: Car Thread
Fashionably Late
The refined art of being just late enough (5 minutes to an hour) to give the impression that you are a busy, popular person that was held up with other business.
Read the parable of the ten virgins, Matthew 25:1-13, and relate it to the plight of those who have to climb one of the rescue towers.

Re: Car Thread
There's nothing fashionable about being stranded , possibly due to not paying attention to the signs, and having their vehicle ruined.

Or not having enough petrol for their lamps, err, I mean automobiles.
I agree, not being prepared with petrol, tide tables and enough time to be ahead of the tide can be disastrous.

Re: Car Thread
"Darwin Awardees." Now, THERE's an expression worth jotting down for future use.
Re: Car Thread
How about defining "Darwin Award and Darwin Awardee" so we all have the same idea of what it is?

Re: Car Thread
My friend Tony passed away last month. I used to sit with him on the town square on Friday nights and watch the cars at the local cruise-in;

You begin flying with a full bag of luck and an empty bag for experience. The object is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
Re: Car Thread
Sorry to hear it John...condolences to you and to Tony's family. Been going through a bit of that here as well. Hopefully his gear finds a good, appreciative home, but I worry about the long-haul prospects of the old car hobby. In another twenty years or so all the grade-A cars will be in museums and the much-loved beaters will be here:
The younger generations don't seem to have much interest.

I've noticed that, too, not just in reference to possessing antique cars, but also in reference to teenagers and 20-somethings getting their own vehicles for everyday use. I just don't see the urgent desire and devotion held for having a car as my generation did in the 60's & 70's. I could be wrong in my observation, however. Murph
