Plus, don't forget , back in those earliest days of inventing the USA , as memorialized forever in such records as "The Scarlet Letter," women were executed for wearing a colorful ribbon or even for simply being happy enough to whistle or hum a tune .

The Scarlet Letter was also set at least a century earlier and also more hyperbole as the exception vs. the rule.

All true, of course, but for me that novel epitomized the way-of-thinking for numerous individuals and closed-communities of those early Colonial times, some of which may have been continued in later congregations . I don't know for certain; it's simply an overall impression I deduced over time .

Were those the ones in search of freedom of religion? The one ones that were totally repressive of any independent thought and action by anyone? Those folks that managed to drag Christianity to yet another new low?

Re: Time for Church
Let me offer the viewpoint that the church was probably part of a civic/military leader's fortress, perhaps as it's chapel. Also, I'd imagine the grassy / foliage areas were likely where the residence and public rooms were constructed. It's being set so high on a promontory, accentuated by its lone (remaining?) tower which overlooks the broad valley, supports my idea that it was all a fortress.

Yes, indeed, pretenders abound. And lurk. All for the show.
