The family out for a picnic at the South Penn tunnel near Roxbury....

So is it truly a tunnel, already out of service, or is it the arch of a bridge? Where are the tracks? Appears to be turn of the century, so you'd think it still might be in operation at the time of the picture. Hell, maybe there was a cave-in. All those rocks piled up in front. Captions would make a big difference toward the application of history.

Mitch,
It is a tunnel that the RR would have gone through and it was never finished - The South Penn RR was never finished and some of the tunnels and roadbed became the PA Turnpike.

Clearly that was taken before the days of Prozac

When I was teaching the question was asked about why people in old photos hardly ever smiled.
My answer was they hardly ever had much to smile about. They got up at dawn or earlier and worked
until dark or later just to live. Not much to smile about. Also in old photos you were discouraged from moving.

I was pretty impressed that they managed to get that many children to how still for this picture!
BTW, the real picture is also only about 3.25" square.

No idea; the writing on the back of the picture does not help.

That's taking one the unfinished South Penn RR tunnels and it's conversion into one of the PA Turnpike tunnels....

Nice find Rufus. If that's the building between the new trolley barn and the and the EBT shop its foundations are now almost completely obscured by a dense thicket of stinging nettles. Twenty years ago you could still get pics of the pit and bearers for the stationary steam engine and its large flywheel.
