The dangles in my home area were more like rope or leather cords with a knot in the bottom end.

Lovely locomotive. My best guess on the date of the picture is 1910. Looks like the air pump was added to the left side in a re-shopping. Is that an automatic snifter valve leaking behind the conductor's right shoulder?

I think that is a good guess on the valve.

I don't see any connections to the air tank. The air tank has a line which looks like it goes under the boiler to the engineer's side. I'm guessing that's where the air pump is.
