Ooohhh, I see your point, now. I was thinking that you were possibly referring to the Industrial Revolution. Before that time, the USA was largely agricultural, with goods being handmade.

However, nowadays, I believe (don't really know for sure) quite a number of family-owned farms have been and are being bought-up by "agri-businesses". So, that's why, Rex, I was uncertain about the point you were making. I was looking forward to your developing/explaining your idea further.

Not for me to start a long-winded discussion. The texts are full of the situation in the colonies and the discontent leading to the Revolution. The English were determined not to let the colonies become, essentially, self-sufficient. It took the epochal changes at the beginning of the 19th Century to start the new US on the road to manufacture (see Paul Johnson's book on the subject. And so on, and so forth.

The answer to that is obvious - get building!

So how does he explain there being only one Smurfette?
And how did the tribe continue to grow?
Or were they immortal?

Sent Rufus' joke about the balloon giraffe to my bride, who thought it was almost funny. Maybe I'll try it on Facebook.

And how did the tribe continue to grow?

Cloning....

Or were they immortal?

On comparison to our lifespan, yes.

Unfortunate on (a) but normal in (b).

Civilization has made a step forward. We can thank Yuengling which has created "butterbeer flavored ice cream". What else is there to say?
