Here is a maintenance car. Poor thing has been weathered hard. Looks like it has been sitting in the field a little to long. Both ends look like trolley cabs. The middle is an open flat. Coming out of each roof is a gantry arm.

Jamestown, Westfield & Northwestern......... I like the hinged side boards - have to look about to see if I have any on the shop that might be suitable for this purpose.....

To keep stuff from rolling/falling off the sides.......think bowling balls, watermelons, and clowns.

So they would fold upward to a vertical position.
I was thinking horizontal.

That would be what I might think that these were used for - to hold stuff from falling off...

Murph,
I think I know what we are talking about.I thought it was just part of the side rail but Rufusette says it is hinged.
It starts a foot or two from the end near the strap step.

It might work as a dock plate (ramp for easy loading). this would keep hand truck wheels from getting stuck between the dock and car deck. What is there to keep thing from rolling of the front or back?

think Vw pickup truck, or double cab with folding siderails so you can get at the load.

Yup! Captured a few for future possible projects - I really, really, really need a small 4 wheel trolley sprinkler car,
