The previous number of 43,400 has now been updated to 55,400

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul promised more government transparency on her first day in office and by day’s end her administration had quietly delivered it by acknowledging nearly 12,000 more deaths in the state from COVID-19 than had been publicized by her predecessor, Andrew Cuomo.

New York now reports nearly 55,400 people have died of COVID-19 in New York based on death certificate data submitted to the CDC, up from about 43,400 that Gov. Cuomo had reported to the public as of Monday, his last day in office.

"We’re now releasing more data than had been released before publicly, so people know the nursing home deaths and the hospital deaths are consistent with what’s being displayed by the CDC," Hochul said Wednesday on MSNBC. "There’s a lot of things that weren’t happening and I’m going to make them happen. Transparency will be the hallmark of my administration."

The absence of caring was painfully evident last year in the US, too. That attitude continues on with the large number of anti-vaxx'ers and their associated ilk. Perhaps that will be a self-resolving problem.

It can, but it will have to be better managed and thoughtfully done. Not giving a damn about anyone but one's self and only looking forward in time 15 minutes is not sustainable.

There are too many people and this is the cause of most of our problems today. By trying to feed this multitude by artificial means (chemicals, GMO, etc) we are destroying the last bit that mother earth has given us. And consumption of fish from the oceans by the latest commercial technology is eliminating many species; throw in run off chemicals, global warming and other pollution and we are eliminating the ones we don't eat. We are in serious trouble.

And by the time every 3rd world country takes/uses their natural resource, as the major nations have done for centuries, it will be too late. I can understand their feelings, why should they be dictated too on how to use their natural resources, by nations who have already raped the own. We expect them to behave better than we did, although I don't think we realized the consequences of our folly until it was too late, but we are still allowing it to happen in the USA today.

Lets face it: humans are a very stupid, selfish, shallow and self gratifying species as a whole. We can tell everyone else how to live their lives, as long as we can ignore what we say and do what we want with ours.

It is very much closer to eight billion. I am with Butch - way too many. When I was born it was just over two billion.

What we need is an economic theory that does not depend on growth.

10,000 TSA employees have tested positive for COVID

(CNN) – More than 10,000 Transportation Security Administration workers have now tested positive for COVID since the beginning of the pandemic.

According to TSA numbers released Monday, more than four in every five employees who tested positive worked at airport security checkpoints.

Of the 65% of workers who responded to an agency-wide survey, 72% said they are fully vaccinated.

The agency said 26 of its workers have died after contracting the virus.

The data on test results could change, however.

Workers have until Oct. 1 to respond to the survey.

TSA hasn’t said how it will handle workers who receive an exemption from the Nov. 22 deadline for all federal workers to get fully vaccinated.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Drugmaker Merck said Friday that its experimental COVID-19 pill reduced hospitalizations and deaths by half in people recently infected with the coronavirus and that it would soon ask health officials in the U.S. and around the world to authorize its use.

If cleared, the drug would be the first pill shown to treat COVID-19, a potentially major step forward in global efforts to control the pandemic. All COVID-19 therapies now authorized in the U.S. require an IV or injection.

A pill that could be taken at home, by contrast, could keep many patients out of the hospital, easing the workload on strained health care professionals. It could also help curb outbreaks in lower-income countries that don’t have access to the more expensive infusion therapies.

Merck and its partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics said early results showed patients who received the drug, called molnupiravir, within five days of COVID-19 symptoms had about half the rate of hospitalization and death as patients who received a dummy pill. The study tracked 775 adults with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 who were considered higher risk for severe disease due to health problems such as obesity, diabetes or heart disease. The results have not been peer reviewed by outside experts, the usual procedure for vetting new medical research.

An independent group of medical experts monitoring the trial recommended stopping it early because the interim results were so strong. That is typical when early results show so clearly that a treatment works that there is no need for further testing before applying for authorization. Company executives said they plan to submit the data for review by the Food and Drug Administration in coming days.

Once the submission is complete, the FDA could make a decision within weeks — and, if OK’d, the drug could be on the market soon after. Merck only studied its drug in people who were not vaccinated. But FDA regulators may consider authorizing it for broader use in vaccinated patients who get COVID-19 symptoms.
