Most Chinese signs for fire extinguishers say 灭火器; where 灭 = fight, 火 = fire, 器 = device.

灭火瓶 also means fire extinguisher; where 灭 = fight, 火 = fire, 瓶 = bottle.

Hand grenade is 手榴弹 in simplified Chinese; where 手 = hand, 榴 = pomegranate, 弹 = elastic, but 榴弹 = grenade.

How the translator got "hand grenade" from 灭火瓶? First, I suspect the translator did not have the fire extinguisher, or an image of it, available to help with translation. Second, I am reminded of the short time I lived in Louisiana. I understood the English words the Louisianans were speaking but not the meaning of all the words. I suspect the Chinese to English translator was from Southern China where "fight fire bottle" is associated with "Molotov cocktail" and a metal "fight fire bottle" is a "hand grenade."

Now I am curious how many can see the Simplified Chinese Characters in this post. I have the Chinese fonts loaded on my computer so I can type them with a keyboard. What do y'all see?

Edit 1: Changed "y'all all" to "y'all." (I don't speak Southern, but I know better than, "y'all all." :roll: )

Thank you Rufus and Roger. These computers seem to be multilingual, able to display most any language.

Probably well within the capabilities of the average graphics card and monitor these days, too.

y'all = one or a few persons

all y'all = a whole bunch of folks

Incidentally, my spell-check dislikes ya'll (which I typed by mistake) but accepts "y'all" as a legitimate word.
