I have been making reference to "hysterical" novels since 1948.

Is irreverant better or worse than irrelevant? :D :D

Hysterical novels seem to be able to fit either.

If we got all your snow I would be physically dead but flush with cash. ENVIOUS OF YOUR LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

Man, it's all relative, isn't it?

The snow has been a chore, because of our driveway/lane circumstances, but it's been a banner winter for sled-riding, (kids have an 800 ft run), and the snow pack will help keep our well-water replenished. Never have I drunk sweeter tastier water.

43 degrees today! Birds singing their Spring songs. Broke out the t-shirts and flip-flops.

It won't last long (supposed to be -2 tonight, high of 7 tomorrow), but what a glorious Promise.

"What a glorious Promise," I like that, Pete.

There is no snow here, but in case it ever does snow, the paint department at ACE Hardware is ready.

"Cool" is a good way to describe our winters. Prediction for today/tonight is 72/52.

I'll be needing a Model-T truck-full of gloss-white paint myself, come long-awaited and much-anticipated Spring, (due to arrive.. what? Around June?). Have a picket fence to renew.

At that time, I'll hope to pull my best 'Tom Sawyer' on my three adolescents. :D

From Twain, himself:

"Tom said to himself that it was not such a hollow world, after all. He had discovered a great law of human action, without knowing it – namely, that in order to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain. If he had been a great and wise philosopher, like the writer of this book, he would now have comprehended that Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do, and that Play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do."

Pete,

I started to read your post and was going to recommend the firm of Sawyer and Finn to paint your fence.

Was not surprised when I scrolled down to find you were light years ahead of me.

I had tried to "Twain" some others in my household and other friends then learned that they had all read the same books.

March 1st, the story continues:

Another 1-3 inches today, followed by freezing rain...tomorrow's commute should be a peach. No sign of those robins...they may have turned around and headed south.

Rich and Roger, 'great minds think alike'! 8)

Healey, (*gloom*), we're getting snow as I write, supposed to get 2-5, with this first day of March. I am still glad to be rid of February, within which the local news said we broke 4 separate low temp records. No Spring birds whatsoever, yet.

I see your neighbors will be needing the paint truck themselves!

Dirt - Three of my immediate neighbors have picket-fences, each taking a different tack. One left it natural and just sprays it down with Thompson's water seal (or something similar) every few years. Another stained his with a pigmented opaque stain. The third painted it white. I fear the guy who painted it white has the most work ahead of him, but his looks the best. The trouble is there's very few willing kids in the neighborhood anymore...we've gone heavily geriatric.

Same 2-5" followed by sleezle called for here. The snow falls just like it did in February, but still glad to see February gone. We broke the recorded records for the coldest February both in daytime highs and in mean temps here.

Your robins are all here, though, probably by the hundreds at this point. They seem to either be incredibly stupidly optimistic still or they know something we don't but would like to see happen. The drive was absolutely red with holly berries, and the robins would follow the Mini as I went down the drive to the street picking up the newly crushed berries left in my wake. It somehow reminded me of seagulls following the ship back in my days as a merchant seaman.

I have to say I've been in a bit of a funk, though coming back out of it. We lost our old gray cat of 19 years on Tuesday; been very tough even though 19 years is a helluva run. The continued snow has added to the wearisome atmosphere. Lucky for me, a cheerful fire in the fireplace always helps, a nice cuppa and Girl Scout cookies for "elevensies", and our two Manx cats and the big ginger tom are very social this morning.

Spring will be all the more sweet when it gets here, but first we must indulge the fifth season for which our area is justly famous. Here we have Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Mud.

But you knew that already.

Unclear what we are going to get here today - was snowing, but supposedly will turn to sleet and freezing rain and then rain, but tomorrow morning may be the real challenge for those of us that actually have to get up and at least pretend to go to work.......
Just remember: what horses consider play, monkeys consider business, but to Tom it’s all foolery.
