Tramp,

Wonderful column. Thorough reading enjoyment. Clever how you got an excerpt of a novel published. Maybe a publisher will see it and ask for more.

One of the cool characters I met, long ago, was Smiling Jack. Jack was a Lt. Airman in the Army. He was cool as you describe in the column, but he had a quirk that gave him away when he was nervous. Asked to land on a short sod runway with a tailwind and he would start smiling as he said, "Yes sir!"

One summer, we were in Chandler, AZ., filing a flight plan and getting the weather forecast. The forecast was for building thunderstorms. Jack started smiling. I told him that thunder heads were not a problem. The downdraft and windshear is under the anvil head. Just fly around the other side of them. We had a smooth flight back to California, threading our way between the thunder heads.

Tramp,

Very interesting as usual.

IMHO true cool, like jazz, cannot be taught. You either have it or not.

I feel that many "jazz" players that went to college [any type] to learn how to play jazz do a nice job but usually lack an important component- - - Feeling.

Wayne,

I remember the comic strips. In the early 1940s most pre-teen boys used Smiling Jack as a role model.

I hung my flag today. We're grilling though it's only Friday. Marinated giant prawns, maui-maui, or however it's spelled. Just opened a dozen little necks lubricated with Metaxa. Added Greek olives and feta. Weather is that perfect Maine weather that is so good it's unfair. How's everyone else doing?

My old style "Don't Tread On Me" flag is hoisted as well. For fireworks I've added another piece to my arsenal. A Springfield Socom 16 .308. This weekend will be spent in the bunker with C-rations and everyone pitching in on hand-loading rounds. :)
Happy 4th, All!

Anyone ready for a joke? Begging the pardon of all from Arkansas or thereabouts.

So a guy and his sweetheart from Arkansas got married. The next day the guy returned his new wife back to her home saying: "She's a virgin. If she's not good enough for her own family, she's not good enough for me either!"

Happy Fourth, everybody!
Hev, An Amish related question, if you please.
If I were to model an Amish homestead, would I ever include a light fixture on the outside of a barn or on one of the farm's other buildings? I noticed on one of the links provided w/ your posting on another thread of Lancaster photos, that one tourguide said the/some "modern" Amish do use electricity, and that other Amish use a kerosene-powered generator to make their own electircity.

What is your understanding of whether they use electricity or not (Should I have no wires leading from a utility pole to the house/barn?) and on my putting a simple one-bulb, green shade light fixture on the outside of a hayloft, for example, such as shown here....?

No lamps Murph Man. The Old Order do not have lamps on the house or barn. They have hooks where they can hang there lanterns. They just light up there lanterns with white kerosene and do what they have to do.

Now the New Order Amish do have electric lights on there barns and houses just like us English people do.

Tell that tour guide that he or she is full of shit.................LOL..................

The Old Order Amish here in Lancaster County have diesels with a generator and air compresser on it to charge there batteries and run things with air pressure like all there air tools and ceiling fans in the barn and house. The air also runs there air operated well pumps.

All ya need is an air tank like about 500-1000 gal tank to hold your air.

I'm thinking about putting in an air well pump for my water. That way when the electric is out I will still have water for washing dishes drinking and bathroom duties.

Thank you, Hev.
Would such equipment be placed outside the buildings or inside a shed made especially to house it?

Would a machine (compressor?) like I have in these two scenes be appropriate to represent/model what you are describing?

Would that look like the equipment in a shed that blew apart in the movie, Twister, of a few years ago, into which the two main characters ran to escape a tornado descending on a farm, but ended up having the entire shed blow apart as they were starpped to (what I think was) the well pipes/machinery?

Thank you Hev.

I have no trouble learning something everyday with you around.

Pneumatic fans are mostly used in explosive atmospheres such as mines or paint booths. I never thought of using them in a barn or house.
