Glad I was able to pull these out of my archive files for you - it is interesting to drive through Caledonia Park on Rt. 30 between Chambersburg and Gettysburg, and be able to reflect back on the above scenes and how it was, and how it is today.

One more from Caledonia....

a nice scene featuring Birch Run:

Man-o-man, that would be fun to model. Just figuring how far across the landscape to go - the breadth and parameters - with the woods would be interesting. Even the fact of the photo being black-n-white excites the imagination. :D

Brings back a lot of memories of my youth spent with my grandfather out fishing in streams that looked very much like that scene....a lot of great summers spent in fun and work learning a lot of "how to".

Your photo, Rufus, of that pastoral spot reminded me a tiny bit of one, sans stream, though, that I much enjoyed crafting, a few years ago...

I think he is at the PHOTOGRAPHERs shop to get his picture made.
Look at the backdrop and the rug. Parents were doing the same things to their kids when I was his age.
Hated it. Had to get all prettied up in my Sunday best and hoped my friends didn't see me.

That's one remarkable outfit, too; plus, he doesn't seem like he's suffering the moment, though.

Somehow that scene looks rather Eastern European to me. Maybe the clothing he's wearing and the wagon style?

One particularly strong thing I noticed about the boy is the personality already quite apparent. He seems an even-tempered, amiable fellow, which I imagine served him well his whole life.

One of the aspects I feel every time I see a photo of this approximate circa which features a child (or children) is that at the time of our viewing the photo, that little boy has lived out his entire life, probably becoming some whole family's grandpa at some point. A whole life, glimpsed by us here, lived fully, and now gone.

I hope that little boy had fun, all along the way.

There is a feature in that photo that is seldom seen in photos of that period, the boy is SMILING.
The boys family may be from eastern Europe but I think the photo was made in this country.
Just a feeling. Many photos similar to this were made in my home area of eastern Ohio.

The boy's white cap is a style I have never seen before. His clothes have a distinctly military appearance. Notice the medallion around his neck...a star and chevron. I dunno. German, Prussian. Austrian comes to mind. Never seen any outfits like this in USA photos.

Dang! Why didn't they put some info on these pictures. It would save a lot of head scratching!
