Yeah, Hev, that is the top of the Cranberry Grade at Terra Alta, W. Va. I believe the elevation there is around 2500 ft elevation, still not the peak, which is at Altamont, 2652 ft. The elevation at Rowlesburg is 1250 ft just 11 miles away. My dad was raised in Rowlesburg, and at age 14 bucked ties on the B & O in this area, before he hopped a westbound an ran off at age 16. He ended up in Mingo Jct, Ohio and worked in the steel mill there. His job was to keep the boilers fired in the switcher engines in the mill. The top of Cranberry is 2.6%, but between there and Rowlesburg, near Maguires, the grade hits 2.86%. That's some tough railroading. The famous 17 mile grade would be continuing east and down, from Altamont to Cumberland, Md.

Jon, welcome back. Glad the boy is recovering nicely. Amazing that we often don't care about our own health, but when something happens to our kids, it puts the fear of God into us.

I had relatives that lived at Mingo Jct. and I was always glad to visit them because of the railroads. The PRR St.Louis line and the PRR river line [old C & P I think[,the P&WV,the W & L E and the Mingo steel mill which was Carnegie Steel originally [I think] and is now Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel and ,I think,is still in operation along with the plant at Steubenville. This mill had standard, narrow and wide gauge railroads.

Jon, Airborne's reaction...

"Ohmigod, I wish I had one! And he topped it off with a Marine helmet!"

He was pointing out the features to me that he noticed, before I had the chance to name them from your list. 8)

I said in another post that we're 'defended' here at this house. Three of the guns are Aaron's, he practices regularly, and he'd be the one covering my back. He'd sell his sister to the devil to get a chance to meet you and see your collection! 8)

Warren Buffett has purchased BNI. Talk about buying yourself a railroad to play with. Of course it cost him around 67 billion.

The report I saw on TV wasn't clear to me.

Did he buy BN industries or BNSF railroad or the whole shebang?

Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway Inc.'s (BRKA, BRKB) plans to buy the 77.4% of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. that it doesn't already own. (Berkshire Hathaway previously purchased a total of 4,363,000 shares on 1/15/2009.) Berkshire Hathaway announced this morning it would acquire Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNI) and about $10 billion of its debt for a total of $44 billion. Berkshire Hathaway said it is paying $100 per share for Burlington Northern in a deal valuing the railroad at $34 billion.

BNI has 340.4 Million shares outstanding. Yesterday they closed at $76.07. Value of all 340.4 Million = $25.9 Billion. I just checked and they are trading at $97.60 as of 12:53 PM today. Value of all 340.4 Million = $33.2 Billion.

Warren did not get it all, I still own 28 shares of BNI. I imagine that I will be sitting right next to him at the next stock holders meeting.

He didn't get my shares yet either, but he will. Wayne, you and I can at least set up the hobos with some beers. I bought my shares for and average price of $61, so I'm pleased.
