Bit dreary this morning at my place in PA; could barely make out the other side of the valley. Amish were heading up the road all morning so chuech gathering must have been north of us. Several went by on foot by the side of the road in the rain.....

I read your comment above and had no idea how you hurt yourself.

Then I watched it... and had to imagining you jumping in sympathy like members of the audience. And then the girls were jumping rope while on their backs and tummies. What a sight that must have been with you bouncin' off the floor in sympathy. As one audience member said (I read her lips) OMG!

Jumpin' rope on your knees or *** requires a healthy degree of dexterity. I would think those kids practiced long and hard just to remember the choreography of the routine, let alone the physical part of it. Thumbs up to those kids.

I wonder if those kids can make change or write a readable sentence.

Too often I have seen kids that will work like crazy to do something like the above,which IMHO shows that they are capable of thinking,but cannot or do not put any effort into doing anything else with any degree of accomplishment.

Roger, I'm not saying you're wrong, or that that isn't possible. You were an educator- I never was. Probably the usual percentage will go on to regress in high school and make bad adolescent choices. But these kids aren't sitting in front of an X-box, Nintendo, or boob-tube, dyeing their hair purple, or hanging out at the mall. This program grew out of a phys-ed program at school. I think it would be equally likely that their work ethic, their dedication, their sense of responsibility, the sense of personal achievement and accomplishment and satisfaction, the necessary ability to be involved in intense teamwork, the ability to project professionalism, the chance to travel, the reaping of the obvious reward for their hard work in how the fans go absolutely totally bonkers, and the simple FUN that is so evident on their faces... I would think that it has the potential to carry over not only into their academics, but many other facets of their lives and futures.
But then, I'm a 'glass-is-half-full' kind of guy.

The Firecrackers are a performance jump rope team made up of talented 4th-8th graders from the Kings Local School District in Ohio... The Firecrackers grew out of an elementary school physical education exposition. Coach Lynn Kelly was looking for a rhythmic activity that could be choreographed to music. She found some jump ropes, a few interested students and some good music. The response to the activity was so positive, that it was suggested that the group perform at halftime of a Junior Varsity basketball game. More overwhelmingly positive feedback lead the team to perform at more high school games and then eventually college and NBA basketball games... The team practices approximately two hours a day, five to six times per week.
