They were probably a well known pair. They were either aviators or just liked to pose.
I wonder if they are the ones responsible for the hat on backwards fad that is still happening?
I guess if it is still happening it is no longer a fad is it?

Later he developed the so-called "headless" version with no forward ailerons. The Curtiss museum in Hammondsport NY is tremendously worthwhile if you get up that way. Many examples of Curtiss' work, including some from Curtiss-Wright after he was gone. The guy was prolific.

He did not, however, invent hip-hop. I suspect they wore their caps backwards to avoid the wind catching the brim and blowing it off in-flight. There are no confirmed photo's of Curtiss wearing drooping baggy pants with his boxers hanging out.

I was unaware of Francis Thomas Evans though I owe him many thanks. His spin recovery techniques saved my bacon several times when I was learning aerobatics. An old aviator had told me that when the airplane is falling out of the sky the best thing to do is point the nose straight at mother earth and apply full rudder opposing the direction of rotation. When the rotation stops center the rudder, wait for the airspeed to get to about 1.5 times the stall speed (this is crucial) and then pull out of the dive.

Headless pushers had no front elevator. The Wrights and early Curtiss aircraft had elevators mounted on struts in front of the wing. Both later added elevators to the tail and then eventually abandoned the front elevator. Curtiss used ailerons mounted between the trailing edges of the wing to get around the Wright's patent.

The story of that patent fight is fascinating and includes Alexander Graham Bell, Alexander Wolcott (secretary of the Smithsonian and founder of what became NASA) and Augustus Herring who worked for Langley and Chanute, visited the Wrights at Kill Devil Hill in 1902 and went into business with Curtiss. Herring made the first powered flight with a Langley style hang glider in 1898 and later left the Curtiss factory with the cash box in a speedboat, pursued by bullets.
