Hev,

Interesting advertisement.

Ballantine was founded in 1840 in Newark, New Jersey by Peter Ballantine. At its peak, Ballantine was the 4th largest brewer in the United States.

In the 1960s Ballantine Brewery closed its doors and the brands were acquired by Falstaff Brewing under whose stewardship the beers remained faithful to their original flavor profile. By the late 1980's, though, Ballantine Ales were produced by a number of different outsourced companies. Since 2005, the Ballantine Ale brand has been owned and marketed by Pabst Brewing Company, which in turn outsources brewing to Miller Brewing Company.

Sounds like the way our 3rd rail trains have gone... absorbed and out sourced.

Maybe the best beer in the country, a sacrament of American brewing, and now it's basically undrinkable. A crime. Why can't someone bring Ballantine ale back to its former glory?

In view of the circumstances, I have decided to have hassenpfeffer in honor of Daisy's birthday.

And to Pete, San's recipe sounds great. Just substitute a young groundhog!

Men walkin' 'long the railroad tracks
Goin' someplace and there's no goin' back
Highway Patrol comin' over the ridge
Hot soup on a campfire under the bridge

Shelter line stretchin' 'round the corner
Welcome to the new world order
Families sleepin' in their cars in the Southwest
No home no job no peace no rest

The highway is alive tonight
Nobody's kiddin' nobody 'bout where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
Searchin' for the ghost of Tom Joad

He pulls a prayer book out of his sleeping bag
Preacher lights up a butt and he takes a drag
Waitin' for when 'the last shall be first and the first shall be last'
In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass

Got a one-way ticket to the promised land
Got a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand
Sleeping on a pillow of solid rock
Bathin' in the city aqueduct

The highway is alive tonight
Where it's headed everybody knows
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
Waitin' on the ghost of Tom Joad

"Mom, wherever there's a cop beatin' a guy
Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
Where there's a fight 'gainst the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me Mom I'll be there"

"Wherever somebody's fightin' for a place to stand
Or decent job or a helpin' hand
Wherever somebody's strugglin' to be free
Look in their eyes Mom you'll see me"

Well the highway is alive tonight
But nobody's kiddin' nobody 'bout where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of old Tom Joad

Saturday night, my favorite supper is being built as I write, wild flowers in the weed strips are beginning to show, pellet stove humming because it's 52 out, which is warmer than the mid-forties of the day, the cats sticking close to the stove like hops to an ale. Oh, right, yes, of course, thank Gog—beer. I'm buying a hobo round for the house and don't care who knows it.
