We have a typical southeast Georgia spring. Some azaleas , some trees in bloom. I mowed grass last week.Temperatures last week near 80, this week 60 daytime . Green pollen on everything. Came here from Ohio thirty years ago. Still dont miss snow . Seven nights below freezing this winter. Dont like to wear a heavy jacket so I am ready for the nights around 70. I really hate to complain.

You know, guys, I'm a car counter, and I see these NS coal trains coming thru Freeport on the Conemaugh Line and have often counted 150 cars. Looking at the markings on the cars, depending on whether they are 3 bay or 4bay hoppers, the tare wt. is between 52,000 and 58,000 pounds, and the gross wt. is 252,000 to 258,000 pounds. If you average the weight, assuming the payload is exactly 100 tons, that would give each car an average weight of 127 tons, multiplied by 150 cars, for a total tonnage of 19,050 minus the weight of the engines. Head end power is usually two Dash 9s, or AC4400s and no pushers. That's why NS still uses the Conemaugh Line, to relieve traffic on the Pittsburgh Line. They can leave Conway yard without pushers until they get to Conpit Junction, picking up helpers there to get them over the Alleghenies. One day last summer, there was a coal train parked over the Seventh st. overpass, with 2 new Dash 9s on the head end. I heard the engines rev up and the train slowly started to creep ahead, and I started counting cars. By car 25, they were coming thru the opening in the trees pretty fast. I was expecting to see pushers after 150 cars, but there were none. What I thought was pretty impressive, when the train started, I heard NO coupler slack noise. That's the great thing about AC traction. You know, it has been said that a big steamer can pull a train that it can't start, and a diesel can start a train that it can't pull. Todays AC diesels make double the tractive effort with the same or less HP as the big steamers. Still, I think Jon needs about 40 hoppers behind that Virginian.
If you agree with the Progressives, it's freedom of speech. If you disagree, it's hate speech. There are no alternatives.
35 cars should be no problem, just as long as they are not those over weight diecast cars. They can realy shorten the length of a train.
The NMRA recommendation is 5 Oz. initial weight and 1 Oz. per inch of car length. A car 10" long should weight no more the 15Oz.

Will Operate Trains Conventionally, TMCC, DCS and DCC.
One of the guys in our group, pulled a 60 car coal drag with a Y6b engine at the last train show we did. He had a real mixed bag of cars on a level track and boy did his engine struggle to get this drag started. He had to bunch the cars together and slowly start pulling to take the slack out. If he stop, he had to repeat the who process.
Boy did it look good.
