We have caller ID that pops up in a window in the TV; if it's someone we know name & number both pop up, we answer. Otherwise we either block it or let it roll to the answering mach with the sound turned off.

Makes practical sense to me. Imagine if a young man like that paid equally closed attention in the classroom.

This week, as I drove by, I saw a man who seemed to be a worker in a several acre-sized business walking and examining his cellphone at the same time. We've all seen that. However, he had gestured to a large trailer-truck where to continue to back-up into the parking/delivery pavement area of the business, and he continued - head down, absorbed in his iPhone - to walk directly behind the truck, crossing its width at the rear. This put him not 6' from the back of the truck, which was moving. Didn't matter. He kept his gaze totally on the phone, not glancing-up even for a moment to make sure he wasn't going to be run-over. The truck continued backing up across the path where the man had walked, and the man kept on his way, still phone-absorbed. (I was still stopped and able to observe all this while awaiting the traffic light of the road that intersected with the entrance to the business lot.)
