Thanks for all the great advice. I realize that the 2 Rail Forum wasn't quite the right place to post the question but you guys came through regardless. I've heard of the vinegar soak method but I'm still concerned about damaging the paper insulators. I'll try soaking just the top half of the rails ...

Ultrasonic Cleaner For Lionel Tubular Track
Does anyone have experience cleaning dirty, somewhat rusty Lionel tubular track with an untrasonic cleaner? I figure if anyone has used one it would be you guys. I'm wondering if the paper board insulators would disintegrate. Any recommendations to offer on the subject would be appreciated.

Whoa! Have you guys seen this? I'm not sure it belongs in this model train forum but sometimes miniature figures and AI are addressed. I know there's been critical discussion about the use of AI. There's a live steam club about an hour from me. One of the members built his own coal-fired steam locomotive. He thought it was messy and took too long to fire up so he converted it to propane, concealing the tank in a box car behind the tender.
